New 5.00% Savings Offer Leads a Mostly Unchanged Deposit Market

First-party collection report for October 13, 2026. Effective dates, eligibility, and partial-refresh limitations are preserved.

New 5.00% Savings Offer Leads a Mostly

Unchanged Deposit Market

Completed 5 AM bank-rate refresh | Official benchmark observations through October 9; latest mortgage survey October 8

Executive summary. The first-party refresh added four credit unions and 270 Bank Verified observations, expanding the

OnlineBankRates universe from 78 to 82 institutions. No verified comparable increase or cut was identified; a conservative audit found 65 unchanged exact-comparable rates. A newly captured 5.00% APY savings tier from CommunityAmerica leads the fresh adult cash panel, but it is capped at $2,500 and requires checking activity. The best broadly accessible savings rate remains 4.20%; the highest fresh CD is 4.65% for 10 years.

1 / Rate Environment

Deposit pricing is stable in the verified matched panel: 0 increases, 65 unchanged rates and 0 cuts (0% / 100% / 0%).

Another 205 refreshed records are new baselines or lack sufficiently identical prior eligibility and product metadata; they are not evidence of rate movement. Borrowing rates remain elevated: the last completed Treasury session saw yields increase across the two-, five- and ten-year curve, while the latest 30-year mortgage average rose to 7.40%.

Best money-market / overall CD 4.05% / 4.65% APY CFG Bank / FNBA 120 months

Benchmark dates are shown explicitly because October 12 was a market holiday and no newer completed Treasury close was available at publication. Latest independently corroborated overnight EFFR and SOFR values are for October 8.

3 / Biggest Moves and Rate Breadth

Direction Strict matched observations Share
Increases 0 0.0%
Unchanged 65 100.0%
Cuts 0 0.0%

Audit: 91 records matched on institution, product, term and balance tier; 26 were excluded because revised descriptions left rate-bump, business-account, checking or placement eligibility insufficiently comparable. All 65 retained observations had unchanged numerical APYs. New institutions establish baselines, not changes.

Seven-day collection context (Oct 7-13): Previously verified moves included EverBank’s 24-month CD +95 bp to 4.35% and 7-month CD -50 bp to

3.60% (both captured Oct 9); CFG Bank’s 18-month CD +20 bp to 4.50% (captured Oct 10); and five earlier-effective 25-bp changes surfaced Oct

  1. At least 15 verified increases and one cut were reported during the window; a fully normalized seven-day unchanged denominator is withheld because daily samples differ.

4 / Where Savers Are Winning

The leading fresh Bank Verified rates in the tracked panel are listed below. A high advertised APY can apply only to a small balance or require specific account activity.

Category Institution / product APY Key limitation
Top qualified adult CommunityAmerica CU — High Interest Savings 5.00% First $2,500; checking, eStatements and savings deposit/debit activity; regional membership
Broad liquid savings Newtek Bank — High Yield Savings 4.20% No stated relationship requirement
Other 4.20% savings EverBank; Happen Bank; FNBA 4.20% New-account, qualifying-deposit or introductory conditions vary
Money market CFG Bank — High Yield Money Market 4.05% $1,000 minimum
6-month CD Happen Bank 4.30% Check opening minimum and eligibility
7-month super-jumbo Consumers Credit Union (IL) 4.45% $250,000 minimum; membership certificate
12-month CD CFG Bank 4.46% $500 minimum
18-month CD CFG Bank 4.50% $500 minimum
24-month CD Happen Bank 4.60% Term commitment
120-month CD First National Bank of America 4.65% Ten-year commitment; $1,000 minimum

Important exclusion: BECU’s 5.12% Early Saver rate is youth-only (under 18) and capped at $500; its adult 5.12% Member Advantage Savings disclosure is classified as aging. Neither is included in the fresh general-adult Best Cash Yield. CommunityAmerica’s 5.00% is a new baseline, not a verified increase.

5 / Borrower Watch

Freddie Mac’s latest 30-year fixed-rate mortgage average is 7.40%, up 12 basis points from the prior week; the 15-year average is 6.73%, up 13 basis points. Using the October 9 10-year Treasury yield of 5.24%, the indicative 30-year mortgage-to-Treasury spread is 216 basis points. Prime remains 7.00%, or 312 basis points above the 3.88% effective fed funds rate. These are different publication dates, not a live lender spread.

6 / Yield Curve and CD Strategy

Term Best fresh CD Treasury par yield Nominal leader
6 months 4.30% 4.32% Treasury +2 bp
1 year 4.46% 4.47% Treasury +1 bp
2 years 4.60% 4.80% Treasury +20 bp
5 years 4.50% 5.02% Treasury +52 bp
10 years 4.65% 5.24% Treasury +59 bp

The 10-year Treasury yield exceeds the two-year yield by 44 bp. Selected short CDs nearly match comparable Treasury yields, while Treasury’s nominal advantage widens at longer maturities. Liquid savings offers flexibility but variable rates. CD APYs and Treasury par yields are not identical return measures; tax treatment, deposit insurance, liquidity, market-price risk and early-withdrawal penalties also differ.

7 / Bank Behavior

No banking category registered a verified strict rate change today. Four newly verified credit unions contributed 158 first-observation rows; six previously tracked institutions contributed 112 recaptured rows. Those new credit-union baselines cannot be counted as increases or used to claim credit unions are moving fastest.

Fresh institution-level sample Digital / online-oriented banks Credit unions Regional bank
Leading savings APY, mean 3.86% (7) 3.90% (3) 0.01% (1)
12-month CD/certificate, mean 4.04% (7) 3.43% (5) 4.00% (1)

Means are calculated from one leading fresh qualifying product per institution, not deposit-weighted or representative national averages. The credit-union savings average is influenced by CommunityAmerica’s capped 5.00% tier. Large national-bank coverage is inadequate for an

Online-vs-National Bank Premium.

8 / OnlineBankRates Takeaway

Today’s headline savings yield reached 5.00%, but that does not mean banks broadly raised rates. CommunityAmerica Credit

Union’s newly captured offer applies only to the first $2,500 and requires checking activity; it is a new observation, not a verified increase. Among 65 conservatively matched deposit products, every APY was unchanged. Broadly accessible savings still reaches 4.20%, while the strongest captured 12-month CD pays 4.46%. Longer lockups do not automatically pay more: the leading 10-year CD offers 4.65%, below the comparable Treasury yield. Borrowers continue to face elevated costs, with the latest 30-year mortgage average at 7.40%. The most useful comparison is not the highest headline APY, but the yield available on the amount deposited, after accounting for eligibility, balance caps, liquidity and withdrawal terms.

9 / Proprietary Metrics

Measure Oct 12 Oct 13 Reading
Savings Index v2 3.13% 3.52% +39 bp; panel/freshness mix changed
12-month CD Index v2 3.85% 3.80% -5 bp; panel/freshness mix changed
Bank Rate Breadth 0 / 65 / 0 0 / 65 / 0 Increases / unchanged / cuts
Fed Pass-Through Score Not supportable Not supportable No adequate fixed pre/post-policy cohort
Online-vs-National Premium Not supportable Not supportable Large-bank comparison cohort insufficient
Best Cash Yield 4.20% 5.00% New capped, qualified savings tier

Methodology continuity: v2 uses the highest fresh qualifying savings or exact 12-month CD APY once per institution. Earlier October 1-7 values use the broader v1 methodology and must not be directly compared. The Savings Index increase is principally a coverage effect, not a same-store repricing claim.

Data, Methodology and Consumer Disclosure

First-party basis. Institution-level figures are calculated from the completed October 13 OnlineBankRates Daily Organic workbook, append-only observations and deduplicated production dataset. All 270 appended observations are Bank Verified; third-party rates are excluded. New products and newly discovered institutions are baselines, not rate changes.

Freshness. Fresh = official rate effective within seven days; aging = 8–30 days; stale = more than 30 days; undated = no verifiable effective date.

Current leaders and v2 indexes use fresh Bank Verified records only. Best Cash Yield is the highest fresh non-checking, non-youth savings or money-market APY, with caps and eligibility prominently disclosed.

Comparable movement. Rate Breadth requires matching institution, category, product, maturity, balance tier, relationship eligibility and geography. Minor equivalent wording may be normalized; ambiguous features or changed account restrictions are excluded. Seven-day figures refer to when verified differences were captured, not necessarily the date an institution changed its rates.

Pending metrics. Fed Pass-Through Score is the fixed-cohort average deposit APY change divided by the effective federal funds-rate change across the same policy window. Online-vs-National Bank Premium is the mean matched APY difference between sufficiently sampled online and large traditional banks. Both are withheld pending reliable balanced cohorts.

Consumer disclosure. APYs are subject to change. Eligibility, balance tiers, regional membership, checking activity, introductory periods, deposit-insurance limits and withdrawal penalties can change actual outcomes. Treasury yields and deposit APYs use different conventions. This is general market information, not individualized financial advice.
